My earliest concept of 'manhood' came from my father. I focused my project on the relationship between my father and I and how his expression of 'manhood' has been projected upon me. To me, my father is many things all at once. He is my blood and the one I call 'dad'. He is my childhood hero. But sometimes he is a child, himself. Sometimes he is the enemy and sometimes he is hurtful. More recently, he is a sensitive subject. As I grow up, I see more of his flaws.
I tried to express this multifaceted concept of 'manhood' and my personal relationship with my father in my montage. The three pieces are meant to be hung horizontally (above), however, the images can be seen in greater detail below.

Your piece is very successful in how each item you chose to use feels like a memento of your childhood or your father. It is also interesting how you used the 25 images so differently in each piece. With that, I find myself trying to find all the images in each part and figure how they are interacting with the images around it. Your work is also strong enough so each piece could hang on its own or altogether as you had intended. Overall, I think your piece works together very well.
ReplyDeleteI think the message of 'manhood' is apparent and well-created yet it is not over powering to the piece. After looking at all three of these pieces I am very curious and interested in you and your father's relationship. I like how all three pieces do not look the same at all yet they obviously all relay the same message, or theme. I think the way you layered real photographs with of your father and you as a child (?) worked very well to create a connection between you two and adding a personal dynamic to the montage. I wonder why you chose to scribble out the eyes of certain people in each image, I like it - it makes it somewhat mysterious. Overall this is a really cool montage and I think you did a great job using the images you chose.
ReplyDeleteI think your pieces speak very loud. After reading the paragraph about your father I am also curious about the relationship you have with him. Reading that and then seeing the pictures you incorporated with it are all very powerful. Not only is your art intriguing but the layout of the pictures work very well together. I would say your project is a success not only the art but the meaning behind it.
ReplyDeleteWow! Excellent work! These are some of the strongest images I have looked at coming out of this assignment in a very long time. Powerful and interesting both in subject and execution. The specific and careful assembly of these images has a natural and inviting sensibility. I am particularly impressed with the way you have created a visual space using flat imagery that has a sense of physical depth. Wonderfully done! Great job Tayler!

I really like the way you used opacity to add new textures to some of the images and I also like the way you used black and white images and color. Everything flows together very well. I think the middle piece is really strong because your eyes start out from the top and move down.I also like your message of manhood behind all of the images and you did a great job of capturing that.
ReplyDeleteI absolutely love the play on words. I think putting "manhood" in the triptych and then showing what the meaning is behind it is absolutely awesome. The way each picture flows is pretty neat, as well. I especially love your colors for each image. They aren't too bold, but compliment each other very nicely. It gives it a older feel. Very nice job.
